Eri is almost 100% correct. There is one accredited college of hypnosis (though their accreditation is by DETC and not regional). However, it’s taught in plenty of psychology departments around the country that are regionally accredited – it’s not something that people get a legitimate degree in, simply an area that some people study.
Whether it’s real, valid, or works doesn’t determine whether something should be studied though. Anything that can be studied should be studied by someone. Hypnotherapy included.
The APA considers it "real" enough that there is an APA division for it. Society of Psychological Hypnosis http://www.apa.org/divisions/div30/
In almost all states, practicing as a hypnotherapist will require at least a license as a professional psychologist. That will usually require a minimum of a master’s degree in psychology and in many places a PhD.
Entertainment hypnotists aren’t psychologists (or hypnotherapists) and usually learn their trade (stage hypnosis) from workshops such as http://www.stagehypnosisseminar.com/
If you want a degree that relates to the therapy/psychology side then you’re looking at studying psychology (through at least a master’s degree).
If you want a degree that relates to the stage hypnosis side then that’d be dramatic arts/theater or performing arts.
If you’re not looking for a degree but would like to learn about it more then the school mentioned above is the Hypnosis Motivation Institute in Ca. http://www.hypnosis.edu/ don’t let their accreditation claim mislead you – DETC is not a regional accreditor even though they are recognized by the US Dept. of Education as legitimate.
No accredited college offers courses in hypnosis or hypnotherapy; they’ve been largely regarded as a load of crap by the professional communities. A top hypnotist has described hypnosis as ‘an agreement between the hypnotizer and hypnotized to pretend together’. It doesn’t actually work – more the placebo effect than anything else.
